Health Insurance Coverage

Most visitors to Australia are not eligible for Medicare (Australia’s universal health insurance scheme, ensuring that all Australians and some overseas visitors have access to a broad range of health and hospital services at low or no cost).

If you are traveling to Australia and lack Medicare eligibility, you are responsible for all costs associated with hospital, medical, and para-medical care, whether provided in public or private hospitals. It is strongly recommended that you arrange your own private health insurance to ensure that you are fully covered for any unexpected medical or hospital care needs while in Australia.

Certain Australian visas require proof of adequate health insurance arrangements before a visa decision can be determined. You may be asked to provide a copy of a current private health insurance policy from an Australian registered private health insurer for yourself and any additional applicants included in your visa application.
